Rumble in the Valley: Saxons Topple A-State 27-3

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team opened the 2025 season with a 27-3 victory over Alfred State College on Wednesday.
 
Mike Halsey (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) started his collegiate career on a high note as he led the Saxons with 10 points on three goals and seven assists. He also notched two caused turnovers and one ground ball. Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) matched his career-high eight points and three assists while scoring five goals. He added four ground balls and a career-high two caused turnovers to his stat line. Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) finished with six points on five goals and one assist. In addition to posting a career-high eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
 
Alfred University (1-0) saw five players score their first career goals. Sam Crosby (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and Christian Moon (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) record two goals apiece. Josh Funk (Newtown Square, PA/Maple Newtown), Colton Keane (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette), and Nicholas Kramer (Fredericksburg, VA/St. John Paul the Great) each had one.
 
Four faceoff specialists saw action in tonight's game, with Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) leading the Saxons with 13 wins.  
 
"Our faceoff unit of Cupp, Aidan Farron, Rhett Krieger and James Connelly got us going tonight." Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "Overall, the guys played hard and did a nice job out there. We have spent too much time indoors this preseason, but I thought the team did a nice job handling the ball."
 
Loewke opened the scoring for Alfred University with a man-up goal at the 11:49 mark of the first period. After Alfred State College (1-1) got on the board, Matson and Moon broke the two with their first goals and the Saxons took a 3-1 lead. Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) registered the winning goal at 6:38 which set the tone for the Saxons the rest of the game.
 
Alfred University had an 18-2 advantage going into halftime.
 
The Saxons outshot the Pioneers, 65-20 and picked up 69 ground balls.
 
Alfred University hits the road to Pennsylvania to take on Alleghany College on Wednesday, March 5 at 4:00 PM.
