ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women's swimming & diving team completed its regular season in a loss at home to Hartwick College.
The team celebrated four graduating seniors: Sarah Anderson (Wayne, PA/Radnor), Maureen Derry (Asheville, NC/Asheville), Gaia McCune (Pittsburgh, PA/Moon Area), and Eden Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster).
"Hartwick's women were pretty strong today. I thought we stepped up; and had great results all around," head coach Brian Striker '00 said. "I sound like a broken record but I have been really impressed with the grit we have shown, given the recent training load. Things we have been working on are falling into place, now we can set our sights on the E8 championship!
Anderson made sure to not go out on a quiet note, as she won three races and was third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.50). She continued her excellence in the freestyle races, winning the 50 and 100-free with times of 25.40 and 55.62 respectively. She also notched a 200-medley relay win alongside fellow senior Derry, Elizabeth Share (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), and Isobel Anderegg (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) with a time of 1:56.80.
Share would lead the side with four wins throughout the afternoon. Her wins in the 100 and 200-back came with respective times of 1:00.06 and 2:12.88. She also led the way in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:02.50.
The final win of the afternoon came in the diving well, where Ruby Kavanaugh (Queens, NY/LaGuardia High School of Music & Art) came out on top in the 3-meter diving competition. She finished up with a score 184.75.
Derry finished her regular season career with a pair of podium finishes, second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:24.22 and third in the 50-free (27.09). Other podium finishers included Anderegg in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:43.63, and Alexandra Simmons (Danbury, CT/Danbury) in the 500-free, clocking in with a time of 5:48.97.
The Saxons now get nearly a month off from competition, but will be working hard at the McLane Natatorium. Those preparations will get them ready for the Empire 8 Championships, starting on February 19.
