UTICA, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team was back in action at the Utica University Winter Opener on Friday.
"We had a strong showing at the competition," Head Coach Matt Phillips '10 said. "Some very good performances, especially this early in the season. We still have a long season ahead of us. So to be in this spot in the middle of January is very promising."
Daimel Fowler (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker) set a personal best in the shot put with a 12.81m (42'-0.5") throw on his fourth attempt (first throw of finals) to claim sixth overall.
Jonathan Hodges (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) competed in the 1000-meter run for the first time in his collegiate career where he registered a time of 2:50.51 for seventh place.
The Saxons saw five PRs set in the track events. Kevin Voegelin (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) and
Mike Thammavong (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) crossed the finish line 0.39 seconds apart for 18th (1:14.23) and 19th (1:14.62) in the 500-meter dash, respectively.
Riley Ciamarra (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and
Jayden Noel (Brooklyn, NY/Automotive) recorded personal best times of 7.44 (32nd) and 7.51 (46th) during the prelims of the 60-meter dash.
Elijah Kahl (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge), Khamani Hunter Sr (Poughkeepsie, NY/FDR), Noel and Hodges were members of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed seventh with a combined time of 3:37.16.
Thammavong, Voegelin, Ciamarra and Neil Peters (The Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) competed on the 4x200-meter relay team that earned eighth place with a time of 1:37.48.
The Saxons will next return to Houghton University for the Highlander Invitational at 10:30am on Saturday, January 25.
