ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University football team claimed all three Empire 8 Weekly Awards on Monday afternoon.
Adam Mietz (Akron, NY/Akron) was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week,
Alexander Coffey (Columbia, MD/Long Reach) was named the Offensive Player of the Week and
Dion Anderson (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institution) was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Mietz had a day as the Saxons defeated Catholic University on Saturday during Alfred University's Homecoming and Friends & Family Weekend, 45-15. Mietz totaled four tackles with three being solo but his biggest highlights were his two interceptions. The first was a crucial pick as the Saxons were finding it difficult to initially stop the Catholic screen passing game. Mietz broke through the two wide receivers who were tasked as lead blockers for the third receiver the Cardinals' pass was intended for. He jumped in front of the pass and caused the first turnover of the game with a two-yard interception return. Mietz's second interception was an 80-yard pick-six as he opened up the scoring floodgate in the third quarter, leading the Saxons to a 28-6 third quarter spread.
Coffey was an all-around menace for the Saxons in their win. The transfer junior was the go-to option on short yardage plays, subbing in as a wildcat QB, rushing five times for 18 yards (no yards for a loss) as he totaled two rushing touchdowns. He was targeted once for a 37-yard touchdown catch and it was the longest passing play of the day. Coffey added one assisted tackle on a kickoff.
After a six-play, 75-yard scoring drive for the Cardinals, Anderson quelled the visitors' momentum with a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown. He totaled 153 yards on three kick returns while adding five receptions for 26 yards.
They were all joined by
Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY/Williamson) as the Empire 8 Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Mietz was named a Saxon of the Week along with women's volleyball's
Taylor Malone (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads).
