ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University football team returned to Yunevich Stadium on Saturday to host No. 14 Cortland, falling to the Red Dragons, 45-7.
Following a turnover on its opening drive, Alfred University turned to
Ian Harpster (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) at quarterback. Cortland scored 14 unanswered points to take an early lead into the second quarter.
Early in the second quarter, a 39-yard rush by
Tommy Nyquist (Warren, PA/Warren Area) moved the Saxons into opposing territory. Six plays later, Harpster connected with
Dan Mucica (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) to move the ball to the goal line. Nyquist finished the drive with a rushing touchdown, cutting into Cortland's lead. The Red Dragons added a late field goal to take a 17-7 advantage into halftime.
Cortland extended its lead in the second half, scoring touchdowns on each of its first three drives after the break. The Red Dragons added one more touchdown late in the contest to secure the 45-7 victory. "It was a tough loss today to a very good opponent," Head Coach
Bob Rankl said. "I think we if made a couple of more plays on both sides of the football we would've had a shot to be in the game. I'm definitely proud of how our guys competed for 60 minutes and we are already preparing for our next opponent Utica."
Alfred University will return to action next Saturday, traveling to face Utica University at 12:00 PM.
