ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University football team celebrated homecoming weekend and the undefeated 1971 football team, but came out on the losing end to the visiting St. John Fisher Cardinals 33-15 on Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons (1-3, 0-1 Empire 8) started the game off on the right foot defensively, as
Domanik Clark (Randolph, NY/Randolph) nabbed an interception on the second play of the game. This set up AU with great field position, ultimately falling short of the end zone.
AU would battle throughout the first half, but was behind multiple scores by halftime. The Saxon defense stepped up in the third, holding the Cardinals scoreless behind 11 total tackles by
Jack Bestpitch (Buffalo, NY/St. Mary's of Lancaster), eight solo tackles by Clark, and seven tackles by
Micheal Davis (Canton, PA/Canton).
In the final quarter, the offense came to life behind the arm of
Matt Parker (Middletown, DE/Gilman School), who threw for 267 yards in the end. He was able to get home two touchdowns, first finding
Damone Allen (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) for a 50-yard score.Â
His second passing touchdown was a much-shorter one-yard pass to
Caden Allen (Bolivar, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) to finish off a 70-yard possession. The Saxons added on with a two-point conversion, put in by
Tommy Nyquist (Warren, PA/Warren). However, a late safety by the Cardinals eliminated a chance for Alfred University to get back into the game.
The Saxons will next hit the road to face Hartwick College at 12:00 PM on October 3.
