ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team concluded their regular season schedule at the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic on Saturday.
The Saxons' top performance came near the end of the meet as
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) won the triple jump with a finals jump of 13.13m (43'-1"). He hit the mark on his sixth and final attempt of the day. Teammate
Antonio Lima Vieira (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) also made finals in the event with his first and best hop-skip-jump of 11.78m (38'-7.75") to finish ninth.
Baitey also ran in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 50.51 to finish fifth overall and third within the Division III, as two University at Buffalo runners finished 0.11 seconds ahead of him (had to go to thousandths of a second for their decision, both running 50.40).
Jason Crocker (Oreland, PA/Springfield Township) made finals in three of his four throwing events, with his best finish happening in the discus throw. He finished third with a toss of 40.05m (131'-4"), shy of second place by three inches. Crocker took sixth in javelin with a throw of 39.58m (129'-10") and seventh in the shot put with a throw of 13.13m (43'-1").
Andrew Parnapy (Byron, NY/Byron-Bergen) joined Crocker in the finals of discus, hitting 34.66m (113'-8") for ninth place, while
Kenneth Berlin (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) just missed joining him in the javelin finals with his 10
th place finish of 36.74m (120'6").
One of the most exciting performances on the track was the 4x400-meter relay. The team of
Kevin Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford), Kevin Voegelin (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone), Jacob Taylor (Cohocton, NY/Avoca) and
Max Rasilla (Moraga, CA/Midland) took third after battling the roughest part of the day-long rainstorm for their time of 3:46.29. Rasilla, running in the anchor position, was rounding his final 200-meters of his lap in fourth place, chased down the anchor for St. John Fisher University, passed him just inside the final 100-meter mark and established enough of a lead to beat the Cardinals by over a second (Fisher's time was 3:47.99).
Other notable performances were
Finnegan Dean (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam Central) in his 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing fifth in a time of 10:08.26,
Yuner Sesmas (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) and his 5,000-meter run as he took ninth with a time of 16:34.87 and
Carter Buckman (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) as he competed outside of the listed events in the decathlon, taking 11
th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.15.
The Saxons will next turn their attention towards the Empire 8 Outdoor Track & Field Championships at St. John Fisher University on Friday, May 3, starting at 1:30pm and Saturday, May 4, starting at 10:00am.
