CORTLAND, NY – The Alfred University women's alpine skiing team competed at Labrador Mountain on Saturday and Sunday, February 17 and 18.
The Saxons were without indoor track & field athlete,
Zoe Rainville (Saranac, NY/Saranac) as they relied on veteran collegiate skier,
Yuliia Koreiba (Kyiv, Ukraine/Gymnasium 315) on both Saturday and Sunday. Koreiba led AU to an 11
th place finish on Saturday's Giant Slalom race and a 12
th place finish during Sunday's Slalom event. Both times, clocking in a team time faster than Paul Smith's College.
"Winter finally arrived, though, after a tough year dealing with warm less-than-ideal conditions so spirits were high," Head Coach
Bob Cilino '13 said. "Saturday welcomed us with a few inches of fresh snow by the morning and flurries and squalls as the day progressed through the Giant Slalom race. Sunday was the culminating regular-season race of 2024 so there were costumes galore and Alfred U did not disappoint in finding comfy cozy robes and sleepwear this year."
Koreiba made Top-50 during both days with her best finish being 43
rd on day two, during Slalom. Her first run was a 1:00.85, the 41
st-fastest time during the first round. She ended the day with a 1:08.04 (44
th-fastest) on Sunday. Koreiba was under one minute on both of her runs on Saturday. She was one of the few racers that kept her first and second run times within the same second interval, reaching the bottom on her first run with a time of 54.06 (50
th-fastest) and a time of 54.71 (46
th-fastest) on her second attempt to finish 48
th overall.
The Saxons will next compete at the United States Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association (USCSA) Mideast Regional Championships on Saturday, February 24 and Sunday, February 25.
