Women's Track & Field Finishes Fifth in Empire 8 Outdoor Championships

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's track & field team finished fifth out of seven teams on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up the 2022 Empire 8 Outdoor Championships hosted by Nazareth College.
 
The Saxons scored 51 team points, just being edged by Houghton College and their 60 points. AU defeated Hartwick College and Russell Sage College. "The effort was definitely there today and overall, we're right there in terms of our team scoring to be more competitive in the Empire 8," Head Coach Dr. Angie Taylor said. "With the E8 championships now behind us, we will turn our attention to regionals."
 
Madison Palmer (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) had the top finish, earning All-Empire 8 Second Team with a second place finish in the shot put, smashing her own school record of 12.17m with a new standard of 12.44m. Palmer scored the most points in a single event for AU on the day with eight from the shot put. Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) had the most overall points, scoring 8.5 points from three events as one point was from finishing sixth in the shot put along with Palmer, throwing 10.06m.
 
Ion tied the Alfred University school record in the triple jump, reaching 11.07m to finish third and scored six points. She is now tied with Danielle Perry '20. Ion then scored 1.5 points in the high jump, tying for fifth place with teammate, Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) as both jumped 1.45m with Bianca Durso (Utica, NY/New Hartford Senior) clearing 1.50m for fourth place and four team points.
 
Over on the track, McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) earned individual points and teamed with Sarah Lutkins (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs) and Morgan Brothers (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) in the 4x400-meter relay. The relay finished fifth with a time of 4:32.59 for two points.
 
Hall finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:11.38 while Gilbert ran a 2:32.16 in the 800-meter run for a sixth place finish as well. Both earned one point each in the individual events.
 
The Saxons will next prepare for the All-Atlantic Regional Track & Field Championships hosted by Moravian University in Bethlehem, PA on Wednesday, May 18 and Thursday, May 19.
