Palmer Leads Women's Track & Field at Ithaca

ITHACA, NY – The Alfred University women's track & field team competed in the Ithaca Invite on Saturday, earning five Top-15 finishes.

Madison Palmer (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) led the Saxons as she had two fifth place finishes on Saturday. She stayed within a meter of her own school records in both throwing events. She threw a distance of 11.54m in the shot put (11.96m record) and a 14.26m in the weight throw (14.85m record).

"Week after week, we know that Madison is going to do what she does best, and that is consistently hit marks like that to not only stay one of the best throwers in the Empire 8, but one of the best in the region," Head Coach Dr. Angie Taylor said. "We had some great races from our relays as well as Olivia [Gilbert] in her 800. We were originally going to have Bianca [Durso] compete in the multi invite at Brockport on Friday, but due to the weather, she's going to compete here at Ithaca tomorrow. Had the weather been better, we may have still seen her compete today after Brockport but we just have to roll with it and we are very excited to see what she does tomorrow."

The 4x200-meter relay team of Sara Badeau (Canaseraga, NY/Canaseraga Central), Megan Jones (Far Rockaway, NY/White Plains), Mackenzie Grosskopf (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Kathleen Matthies (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had the top finish in the relays with a seventh place finish after combining for a time of 2:19.53.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Ashley Page (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell), Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) and Morgan Brothers (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) finished 12th with a time of 4:32.64. Gilbert also earned an individual 12th place finish with a time of 2:29.21 in the 800-meter run which is a new personal best time for her, beating her time of 2:31.17.

The Saxons will next head back to Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, February 11 for a 4:00pm meet. Prior to that, Bianca Durso (Utica, NY/New Hartford Senior) will compete in the pentathlon on Sunday, February 6 at Ithaca, having missed the chance to compete at SUNY Brockport due to the snow storm on Thursday-Friday.
