ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team had one last indoor meet before turning its sights on the Empire 8 Championships as the Saxons competed at Nazareth College on Friday evening.
The Saxons were led by three runners in the 1,000-meter run as the only members of the team to finish in scoring position.
Kyle Jenkins (Marcellus, NY/West Genesee) led the way with a fourth place finishing time of 2:46.37 as
Chris Mayo (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) and
Yuner Sesmas (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) followed right behind in fifth and sixth place with times of 2:49.52 and 2:53.15, respectively.
"The 1,000-meter race was very pleasing to watch as our distance runners ran it like a cross country race as pack-runners," Head Coach
Dr. Angie Taylor said. "Kyle, Chris and Yuner are used to that style of running and it provides a lot of advantages in cross country and can be beneficial in a lot of situations for track. Tonight was definitely one of those situations. Neil was also very close to making finals in the 60 which although it is upsetting, it still gives us a lot of hope and excitement for when we get to the championships."
Neil Peters (The Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) ran a 7.30 60-meter dash in the preliminaries to finish ninth overall, despite missing finals by 0.001 seconds.
The Saxons will next compete in the two-day Empire 8 Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Utica University on Friday, February 25.
