BRADFORD, PA – The Alfred University women's swimming team traveled for a mid-week dual meet on Thursday to defeat the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 128-39.
The Saxons won all of the events except for two against the Panthers. "This was a good effort by everyone," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "We had some great swims, while being able to have everyone get into some off events. It is rare for us to have a mid-week meet, it was great to see that everyone was able to make adjustments and perform well!"
AU got things started with an uncontested sweep in the 200-yard medley relay as the A-team of
Cece Saltysiak (Bay Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island), Erika Purdy (Syracuse, NY/Cicero North), Maureen Derry (Asheville, NC/Asheville) and
Alexandra Simmons (Danbury, CT/Danbury) had the top time of 2:04.80.
Macie Francisco (Vestal, NY/Vestal) also had an uncontested win with a time of 12:21.83 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
It wasn't until the 200-yard freestyle where the lanes saw the first Panther swimmer on the women's side.
Mia Spencer (Omaha, NE/Omaha Central) and Derry went one-two in the three-person race as Spencer swam a 2:10.48 and Derry finished with a 2:15.33.
AU went one-two-four in the 50-yard freestyle as Saltysiak had a 27.95, Purdy had a 28.84 and
Diannlee Letellier Veras swam a 42.36. Simmons took first in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:32.33, followed by
Kamila Roman who was just behind with a 2:33.25.
Spencer and Purdy took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:00.62 and 1:02.92, respectively. Saltysiak and
Sarah Anderson (Wayne, PA/Radnor) were uncontested in the 100-backstroke. Sisters
Ivy Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and
Eden Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) took first and second in the 500-yard freestyle with older sister, Ivy swimming a 6:09.84 and Eden, a 6:24.44.
Roman, Spencer, Anderson and Ivy closed out the evening with a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, combining for 1:51.60.
The Saxons will next travel to Fredonia to face off against the host Blue Devils as well as the Yellowjackets of University of Rochester in a tri-meet on Saturday, November 12. The meet is set to start at noon.
