ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team finished sixth in the Empire 8 Men's Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Saxons scored 10 points on the day with all of that from relays. The distance medley relay of
Kyle Full (Akron, NY/Akron),
George Mecca (Derby, NY/Eden),
Kyle Jenkins (Marcellus, NY/West Genesee) and
Tim Mayo (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) finished third with a time of 11:22.70, edging the team from Houghton and their finish of 11:23.41 to earn the Saxons six points. Mecca then teamed with
Jackson Trimboli (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central),
Cody Collins (Alden, NY/Iroquois) and
Chris Mayo (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) in the 4x400-meter relay to pick up the remaining four points with a time of 3:38.78, just missing third place to St. John Fisher College and their time of 3:38.78.
Â
"I'm very proud of how our men's team competed today and the final score doesn't truly represent the efforts that were put forth today," Head Coach
Dr. Angie Taylor said. "Our relays had really exciting races today and we had some individual performances that were exciting as well."
Â
Alfred University had three close seventh place finishes on the day and two eighth place finishes that also were tight at the finish line.
Tim Mayo was nudged off the podium in the mile by less than seven seconds. Collins was 0.02 away from sixth place in the 60-meter dash and 0.09 away in the 200-meter dash.
Â
Chris Mayo was less than two seconds away from scoring in the 800-meter run while Mecca finished eighth in a 400-meter dash field that saw places four through eight were all in the 53-second range. Had Mecca ran half a second faster, the results would have had him at sixth place and then at fourth place had he finished almost a second faster.
Â
"We're excited to begin our outdoor season after such a short indoor season," Dr. Taylor said. "We'll have a few more athletes and the timing is perfect as the weather is looking better for us to get outside."
