ALFRED, NY – Senior
Abigail Austin (Hornell, NY/Hornell) of the Alfred University women's soccer team continued to accrue post-season accolades as she was named to the United Soccer Coaches Women's Division III Scholar All-East Region Third Team on Wednesday.
To qualify for the award, a player must be a junior or above in terms of athletic eligibility, have a least a 3.40 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their collegiate career, play a minimum of 75 percent of games during the season of nomination and be a top player supported by playing honors such as All-American, All-Region or a minimum of all-conference selections.
Austin was selected to the All-Empire 8 First Team to begin her parade of accolades for her stellar 2021 season. She was then listed on the 2021 United Soccer Coaches Division III Women's All-Region III Third Team honors at the end of November, leading up to her Scholar All-East Region selection. She was also named an E8 Offensive Player of the Week and a Saxon of the Week earlier this season.
Austin was second on the team in points with 15 as she had a team-high seven goals while adding one assist. Out of her 41 shots, 22 were on goal. She scored her first collegiate hat-trick in a 6-0, complete shutout of Medaille College, being credited with the game-winning goal.
Overall, Austin helped the Saxons to an 11-5-5 record, the fewest amount of losses since the 1997 team that went 11-4-1. AU was 5-1-2 in the Empire 8, making it the best E8 record in school history and the first time the Saxons finishes the regular season as the No. 2 seeded team, heading into post-season play. The Saxons also hosted the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference playoffs where they defeated Westminster College and tied with William Paterson University, with WPU advancing on penalty kicks.
