ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team was upended by the Houghton College Highlanders on Tuesday evening in an Empire 8 matchup at Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Â
The Saxons (9-9, 3-4 Empire 8) worked their way back from a large second half deficit and tied the game at the buzzer thanks to a huge offensive rebound and three point shot by
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads).
Â
The buzzer beating triple was the second time this season that Marshall has made such a shot to send the Saxons to overtime as he was able to do the same in a January 11
th victory over Nazareth College.
Â
This time AU was not so fortunate in the extra five minutes and fell by a score of 111-106.
Â
Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY / Ithaca) had a career night with a season high 30 points including five three's. He also added three steals on the defensive end.
Â
Marshall finished with 22 points and nine rebounds on the night while
Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY / Hornell) finished with 22 points and six boards.
Â
Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY / Olean) put together a double-double on the evening with 12 points and a career high 10 assists to lead the Saxons. Schmidt was also spectacular on the defensive end with six steals, which was also a career high.
Â
Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY / Mynderse) reached double figures in scoring for the second consecutive game as he ended with 10 points.
Â
The Saxons could not overcome the sharp shooting from the Highlanders as they made 15 of 26 from beyond the arc to help them to the victory.
Â
Alfred went down by as many as 16 points in the second half and found itself in a 10 point hole with just 58 second remaining in regulation.
Â
Some great defense and multiple three pointers from Marshall, including the buzzer beater that sent it into overtime, gave the Saxons the Surge they needed to tie the game at 94 all when the clock hit zero.
Â
A tight overtime period ended with Houghton hitting more long balls to send them to the win over the Saxons.
Â
Â
"Houghton played a great game tonight and shot the ball extremely well," Head Coach
Russell Phillips said. "They deserved to win the game today. We will regroup and get ready for Nazareth on Friday."
Â
AU will be on the road to play Nazareth College this Friday at 5:30PM.
