Â
Phillips was appointed the 15th Head Coach of the AU men's basketball program prior to the 2014-15 academic year. In just five seasons, Phillips has become the third winningest coach in AU history (92 wins) behind only Ron Frederes (158) and Bob Baker (134) who completed their careers with 16 and 11 seasons under their belts.Â
During the 2018-19 season, Phillips took the Saxons to an Empire 8 regular season title, postseason title and the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 1996-97 season. With a 24-5 overall record, the Saxons finished 2018-19 with the second most wins in program history, trailing only the 1985-86 team which tallied 25 wins. Phillips and the Saxons also tied the 1985-86 team for the deepest run in AU men's basketball history advancing to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Following the run, Phillips was recognized by the Empire 8 as the conference Coach of the Year while D3Hoops.com recognized him as the East Region Coach of the Year. Phillips and the Saxons dominated the Empire 8 major awards with
Sage Brown '19 earning the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year and
Elliot Bowen earning the empire 8 Rookie of the Year.
Â
Phillips came to AU after five seasons at Hobart College, where he was the top assistant under former head coach Izzi Metz (now head coach at Wilkes College) from 2009-11, and former head coach Mike Neer, who recently retired after three seasons (2011-14) leading the Statesmen.

Phillips began his collegiate coaching career in 2007, as a student assistant at his alma mater, SUNY Cortland, under head coach Tom Spanbauer. The following season (2008-09), he served as top assistant to Spanbauer who, coincidentally, is a former AU head coach (1995-96). While at Cortland, Phillips recruited two SUNYAC all-league players, including the school’s all-time scoring leader, Jesse Winter.
Â
Phillips left Cortland after the 2008-09 season to become Neer’s top assistant at Hobart. While at Hobart, Phillips helped coach a Statesmen team that has been one of the most successful in all of Division III. In the last five years, Hobart has gone a combined 104-38, won two Liberty League championship tournaments and appeared in the NCAA championship tournament three times.
Â
The Statesmen also competed in two ECAC Upstate Championship tournament appearances during Phillips’ tenure at Hobart, winning once, and claimed four Liberty League regular season titles. Phillips helped coach a pair of All-Americans and 15 Liberty League all-stars, including two league Players of the Year, two league Freshmen of the Year, and three Defensive Players of the Year.
Â
Phillips has extensive experience coaching outside the collegiate arena. Since 2007, he has worked at several basketball camps. In addition to coaching at Hobart’s camp the last five years, he has worked at camps hosted by University at Buffalo, Keystone State, SUNY Cortland, Lemoyne College, and Syracuse University. He was an assistant coach at the Western Scholastic Boys Basketball Empire State Games in 2007-08 and from 2005-08 served as head coach for U15, U16 and U17 Rochester-area AAU teams.
