Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

First Half Woes Prevent Men's Basketball From Sweep Over St. John Fisher

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team fell at home to St. John Fisher College in Empire 8 action on Tuesday evening, 73-51.

The Saxons (15-5, 8-3 Empire 8) had their win streak snapped after a six-game run. Tuesday's game is just the second home loss at the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena of the season as the Saxons dropped a 77-70 decision to Empire 8 foe, Stevens Institute of Technology in early January.

Alfred's scoring was led by senior Dalton Cousin (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and his 11 points. Junior Dom LeMorta (Scotia, NY/Scotia) along with sophomores Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Derek Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) all had seven points to contribute as the top scores for the Saxons. Junior Sage Brown (Cortland, NY/Cortland) had 11 rebounds to lead the home team while Cousin chipped in with seven.

"Give credit to St. John Fisher. They guarded us well and didn't give us many easy looks and it's hard to win when you shoot 21%," Head Coach Russell Phillips said. "I liked the way we fought and we competed. We kept trying to claw back, but you know, a couple shots fall and maybe it could have been a different story."

The Cardinals shot 43.4% from the floor and 26.7% from 3-point range while making 23-of-30 free throws. Four visiting players made it into double-figures for scoring, led by Tyler English and Ryan Henderson with their 12 apiece. No Cardinal player had double-digit rebounding despite, as a team, out-boarding the Saxons, 49-37.

Alfred University tied St. John Fisher College in the second half, 40-40 but it was not enough to come back from a 33-11 first half deficit.

Every Saxon who stepped on the court scored at least one point on the evening while the Cardinals had six come off of the bench, failing to sink a bucket despite leading Alfred University, 30-24 in total bench points. The Saxons held the advantage in points off of turnovers (13-10) and second chance points (11-5) while Fisher won the battle in the paint (30-22).

The Saxons will next take to the road for their second-to-last Empire 8 road weekend. They will first faceoff with Stevens in Hoboken, NJ at 6PM on Friday, February 9 and then head up to Troy, NY for a 2PM tip against the Gators of The Sage Colleges on Saturday.
