GENESEO, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team traveled to SUNY Geneseo for a mid-week matchup with the Knights on Tuesday evening. The Saxons (4-1, 0-0 Empire 8) fell by a score of 89-73 for their first defeat of the season.
The first half was back and fourth with both teams keeping it tight throughout much of the first half. With the score knotted at nine all with just less than 14 minutes left in the first half,
Dom LeMorta (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) broke the tie with a layup. Just over a minute later, after a Geneseo free throw, LeMorta extended the AU lead with a three to go up 14-10 and give the Saxons their largest lead of the game. Geneseo would tie it up once again 23-23 at the 6:39 mark. From that point on the Knights would go on an 11-3 run to close out the first half and head into the locker room leading 32-26.
The second half was primarily controlled by Geneseo, as they would slowly extend its lead up to as much as 24 points with 9:26 left to play. The Saxons would cut the lead down to 11 with just under two minutes left in the contest but it was too little too late and Geneseo would run away with the 16-point victory to improve to 3-1 on the young season.
LeMorta led the Saxons in scoring on the evening with 23 points.
Scotty Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) recorded a season high 14 points while grabbing five rebounds and recording a team high three steals on the defensive end.
Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY/Hornell) had 10 points and two assists while
Sage Brown (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led Alfred with 10 rebounds and three assists.
"Geneseo was clearly the better team tonight," Head Coach
Russell Phillips said. "We will watch the film, take this as a learning experience and come back sharp for practice on Thursday."
The Saxons will be back at home a week from today when they face off against Keuka College next Tuesday at 7PM.
