ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team got back into the win column on Tuesday evening with a victory over Keuka College. The Saxons (5-1, 0-0 Empire 8) defeated the Wolves by a score of 65-56.
The pace was slow to begin the game with Alfred leading 9-6 after nearly seven minutes of play. Keuka was able to get to the free throw line early and often, helping them regain the lead, 12-10 with 10:03 left to play in the first half. From that point on, the Saxons would go on a 13-4 run to take the lead, 23-16 with 4:15 remaining in the half. AU would extend its lead to as many as 10 in the closing minutes of the first half with the help of a
Dom LeMorta (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) 3-pointer and strong play in the paint from
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicottville). Coming out of a time out with just over one second remaining, the Saxons drew up a lob for
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) from point guard,
Scotty Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) to beat the buzzer and send AU into the locker room leading 32-24 at the break.
Alfred came out in the second half with a better pace, scoring the first seven points of the period to extend its lead to 15. The Saxons continued to extend their lead throughout the second half with the advantage being as many as 26 points at one time. Keuka was able to claw its way back to a nine-point game by the end of regulation but ended up falling to the Saxons for its third loss of the season.
LeMorta led the scoring for Alfred with 16 points. Bowen had an all-around impressive game with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Marshall chipped in 11 points and three blocks on the defensive end while Stopera ended with seven points, five assists and two steals. As a team, Alfred dominated the paint with 44 points to Keuka's 24 and also scored 15 second chance points while the Wolves had just five.
"Happy with the way we responded coming off the loss. We had a different edge and intensity which is the standard that we need game in and game out," Head Coach
Russell Phillips said. "Keuka did a good job in the zone getting out to shooters and our guys did a great job taking advantage of touches in the paint. We need to keep building to be ready for SUNY Canton on Saturday."
The Saxons will be back at home for a matchup with SUNY Canton this Saturday with tip slated for 2PM.
