ALFRED, NY — Alfred University hosted Saturday's Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 2, Region I championships and five Saxon riders advanced to next weekend's Zone 2 championships.
Four Alfred riders were crowned individual champions at Saturday's regional show, while one Saxon placed second to earn Reserve Champion honors. The top two in each event at regionals qualify to compete at zones. The IHSA Zone 2 championships will be held Saturday, April 4, at Lehman Farms in Pittsford, NY.
Earning regional titles for AU Saturday were: junior
Brittany Green (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) in intermediate equitation over fences; junior
Stephanie Zimicki (Lockport, NY/St. Mary's) in open equitation on the flat; sophomore
Melanie Klein (Mastic Beach, NY/William Floyd) in walk-trot-canter; and sophomore
Kaitlyn Adams  (Andover, NY/Andover) in walk-trot.
Green, Zimicki, Klein and Adams will be joined at the zone championships by junior
Kassandra McCarn (Gouverneur, NY/Gouverneur), who took second in novice equitation on the flat.
Four other AU riders earned ribbons for placing in the top eight at Saturday's regionals. Sophomore
Jessica Lewis (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was fourth in walk-trot-canter; sophomore
Gina Weigold (Charlotte, NC/Albemarle) was fifth in walk-trot-canter; sophomore
Cassondre Kronau (Castleton-on-the-Hudson, NY/Maple Hill) was eighth in walk-trot-canter; and sophomore
Alicia Mayville (Canastota, NY/Canastota) was eighth in novice equitation over fences.
The top two riders at Saturday's Zone 2 championships will qualify to compete in their respective events at the IHSA National Championships April 30-May 3 in West Springfield, MA.
