Box Score HAMBURG, NY-- The AU Saxons men's soccer (3-2-0, Empire 8 0-0) team was beaten by the Hilbert Hawks 2-1 to give them their first loss since the season opener.
The Saxons fell behind Hilbert 1-0 in the 25
th minute when Jonathan Davison headed a loose ball past junior
Matthew Unick (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley). The first half would end 1-0 with the Hawks in the lead.
It was the Hawks again to open the second half with a goal merely six minutes in when Austin Mathis blasted a left footed shot to the back of the goal. Just over seven minutes later the Saxons attempted to mount a comeback when
Kyle Craver (So., Great Falls, VA/Field School) sent the ball across the middle of the goalmouth to find senior forward
Jeff Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) who bounced the ball to find nylon to set the game 2-1.
It was the Saxons in the 72nd minute on a penalty kick to attempt to deadlock the game at two, but the shot was denied by Hawks' keeper Brandon Henry. Henry ended the night with 10 saves. The Saxons continued to rattle off shots the rest of the game to no avail as the whistle sounded and the game ended 2-1.
Unick finished the game with four saves throughout 90 minutes.
The Saxons are back on the pitch again Sunday September 14
th against Clarkson University at 1pm.
