AU chosen to compete in ECAC men’s basketball tournament

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team has been selected to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southwest Championship tournament.

Alfred (18-8) is seeded fifth in the five-team tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. The winner of the AU-Juniata game will play at top-seeded tournament host Bethany (WV) College at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. Second-seeded Hood College will play third-seeded Waynesburg (PA) University at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the other semifinal, also at Bethany. The two semifinal winners will play for the ECAC Southwest title on Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m.

Juniata is 15-10 overall, and finished 6-8 in the Landmark Conference. Alfred has played the Eagles twice before, splitting the all-time series.

Alfred is coming off its first-ever appearance in the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament last weekend. AU, which finished fourth in the Empire 8 standings with a 9-5 league mark, lost in the conference tournament semifinals, 90-85, at top-seeded Hartwick. AU will be making its second ECAC postseason appearance in three years this week. The Saxons lost in the ECAC Upstate title game at Cortland in 2012.

Tournament host Bethany is 21-5 overall and finished with a 14-2 record in the Presidents Athletic Conference. The Bison were the top seed in the PAC Conference tournament but lost to ninth-seeded Geneva in the tournament quarterfinals. Waynesburg, also a member of the PAC, have a 15-12 overall record. The Yellowjackets went 9-7 in conference play and lost to St. Vincent in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. Hood College is 17-10 and finished 10-8 in the Commonwealth Conference, losing to Stevenson in the league championship tournament semifinals.
