Box Score ALFRED, NY—AU men's soccer team tied Fredonia State University 2-2, with two goals coming from penalty kicks.
The first half saw no goals as both teams' defenses played very solid. The pace of the game was completely run by the AU midfield, maintaining the ball in the Fredonia defensive third of the field.
AU struck first with a goal when
Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West) came sprinting into the box and ripped a low, hard shot that was parried away by the Blue Devil keeper, Sammy Torrelli to the feet of
Nicholas Milliman (Randolph, NY/Randolph) who knocked the ball into the back of the net.
Fredonia answered with a goal of their own ten minutes later after a tough foul in the box. FSU's Ryan Keller came to the line and ripped a shot to the right past the diving
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East). The Blue Devils took momentum from the deadlocking goal and turned it into another in the 79
th minute when Ryan Ross came into the box and nailed a cross body shot off the right post and into the goal.
With time running out, the Saxons were attacking frantically and sent a ball into the box that found the hand of a Blue Devil defender, and the referee signaled for a penalty kick.
Jeff Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) came in to score for the Saxons with just over two minutes left to play, sending the game into overtime tied 2-2.
Neither team was able to mount a shot on goal during either overtime period, and the game ended, 2-2. Gutierrez finished the night with two saves. The cornerkicks for the game were tied at six.
The Saxons (6-4-1, 2-1-0 Empire 8) return to conference action Oct. 11 at Houghton.
