Men's Soccer

Saxons, Highlanders draw 2-2

Box Score

HOUGHTON, NY—The AU men's soccer team tied Empire 8 opponent Houghton College, 2-2.

The Saxons got right to work during Saturday afternoon's game netting the first goal 11 seconds in from a Jeff Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) penalty kick he drilled into the upper right corner.  However, the Saxon lead was short-lived when Houghton answered back with a goal of their own just over 12 minutes later.

AU would reassume the lead less than five minutes later after the Cory Brautigam goal when Ian St. Pierre (Ann Arbor, MI/Dexter) found senior forward Omar Mohamed (Rochester, NY/Edison) who headed the ball to the back of the net, putting the Saxons back on top 2-1.

The intense first half continued in the 38th minute Houghton's Tyler Groff netted the second Highlander goal to deadlock the game 2-2 before the half.

If offense was the theme of the first half, the theme in the second was defense.  Houghton was only able to muster four shots on goal against AU in the second half, and none in OT as the Saxon defense continued its solid defensive year.  Though the Saxons were able to produce chances in overtime, no one was able to break the tie handing AU its second draw in as many games.

Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) was between the pipes for the Saxons, racking up 5 saves on the afternoon.

The Saxons (6-4-2 Empire 8 2-1-1) hit the pitch again October 14th against Buffalo State.
