Late surge lifts men’s basketball past Utica, 96-93

Box Score UTICA, NY- The Alfred University men's basketball team earned a 96-93 win over Utica College after Junior guard Ryan Mahon (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) hit a last second three-pointer, Friday evening.

This win improves AU to 14-4 overall, and 5-2 in Empire 8 play.

The Pioneers held a 46-43 lead over the visiting Saxons at halftime. Senior guard Thomas Tsatsis (Neponsit, NY/Townsend Harris), senior forward Steve Lothridge (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa (OCC)), senior center Gerald Colas (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge), and sophomore guard Jerry Kincel (Moosic, PA/Riverside) all shared an even workload for AU's offense with six points apiece.

During the second half, Utica remained in the lead until two minutes left when junior guard Tim Pacheco (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) hit a layup, giving Alfred a 90-89 lead. Both team traded baskets, Utica tied the score at 93-93 with nine seconds left, and the ensuing possession Mahon hit the shot for the win as time expired.

Tsatsis finished with 18 points, Kincel (team-high eight rebounds) added 17 points, and Lothridge (seven-of-eight from the field) and Mahon both compiled 14 points.

Alfred returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. against Elmira College in their second Empire 8 meeting of the season.
