ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team defeated Fredonia, with a 3-0 shutout on Tuesday evening from Yunevich Stadium in non-conference action.
It was the first time since 2016's 2-1 home win that the Saxons (2-0-0, 0-0-0 Empire 8) have defeated the Blue Devils (0-2-1, 0-0-0 SUNYAC) and the first time since the home match in 2004 that they have scored three goals. "I thought we worked really hard tonight and got a nice result," Head Coach
Garret Eldridge said. "We will enjoy this for the night and get back to work tomorrow."
Jesus De La Torre (Malaga, Spain/The Woodstock Academy) had his second game in a row with a hand in scoring the game-winning goal. On Saturday, against Westminster College (PA), he assisted on both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the 3-1 victory. On Tuesday night, he received a pass from
Griff Schillmoeller (Waverly, NY/Waverly) and placed it high for the opening goal, going on to be the game-winner. The game-winner was scored just under 15 and a half minutes of action.
De La Torre found the back of the net again when
Juanjo Menendez Gutierrez (Villanueva Cañada, Madrid, Spain/The Woodstock Academy) crossed a beautiful ball to the front of the 18, setting him up to score his second goal of the evening, just over 25 minutes of play into the contest and in the same top right corner of the net as the first one.
Menendez Gutierrez recorded his second assist at the 42
nd minute mark when he found
Hamza Kromah (Margibi, Liberia/Western Reserve Academy) with a threaded pass down the left side. Hamza retrieved the pass through two Fredonia defenders and tucked a shot under the arms of the Blue Devil keeper, finding the right side of the net to go up, 3-0 with just under three minutes left of the half.
The match seemed in favor on paper of Fredonia in the first half as the Blue Devils fired off 11 shots in total, but the Saxons had five, quality shots as three of them were on goal. It wasn't until the second half that Fredonia finally stopped an on-goal shot. The Saxons only took one corner the entire evening late in the second half.
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) picked up the shutout win with one save and multiple cross passes and launched balls into the box intercepted on the evening.
AJ Giaquinto (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake),
Cameron Daley (Montreal, Quebec, Canada/South Kent School) and
Derek Alexei Rodriguez (Panama Oeste, Panama/Gabriel de la Dolorosa) all made spectacular defensive plays that kept Fredonia's offense from firing quality shots at Mulholland and the goal.
The Saxons will next take on their first road game of the season as they head to SUNY Delhi for non-conference action on Saturday, September 12 for a 4:00pm start.
