ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team took home its first Empire 8 win of the 2026 season with a 3-1 win over St. John Fisher on Saturday night.
The Saxons (3-1-1, 1-0-1 Empire 8) exploded right out of the gate by notching a goal just seven minutes into the match. The season debut for
Xavier Bowman (Hampstead, MD/Manchester Valley) got started off on the right foot with a header into the top right corner, with
Jesus De La Torre (Malaga, Spain/The Woodstock Academy) delivering the ball in to make it happen.
Just six minutes later, a handball in the Cardinals box set up a penalty kick for the Saxons in a third straight game. This time, it would be
Lawrence John Taylor (Bong County, Liberia/Westminster School) fooling the goalkeeper to tuck into the bottom right corner to double AU's advantage.
Three minutes before the half-hour mark, the Saxons would put up their third goal of the evening thanks to an individual effort by
Griff Schillmoeller (Waverly, NY/Waverly). Combining with
Keirnan McManus (Penfield, NY/McQuaid Jesuit), Schillmoeller beat five defenders and the goalkeeper to all-but put the game to bed. At the end of the first half, three of the four Alfred University shots had found the twine.
The Cardinals would fight back, and bring one goal back in the 70th minute of action. But
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) stood on his head, making three crucial saves down the stretch. He and the defensive line got in the way of several shots, deflected balls away, and held off a hard-charging St. John Fisher offense to grab the three points.
The Saxons will continue Empire 8 play at home against Nazareth University on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
