ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches at the University of Rochester Invitational on Friday.
The Saxons (3-3, 0-0 Empire 8) went to five sets in a 23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 25-21, 11-15 loss to the hosts to open the day. They then swept Penn College in three sets, preventing the Wildcats from scoring higher than 15 points in a set, winning, 25-12, 25-15, 25-15. The Saxons totaled 28 service aces on the day, with 14 in each match.
Match One
Alfred University - 2 (23, 14, 25, 25, 11) | University of Rochester – 3 (25, 25, 18, 21, 15)
The Saxons were led by Carleigh Santavy (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) with 18.0 points from 13 kills, four aces and two block assists. She recorded double-digit digs with 11, being joined by Abigail Omelan (Tomball, TX/Tomball Memorial) with 11 digs and Madalynn McGowan (Corona, CA/Norco) with a team-high 13. Omelan also had double-digits in points, recording 10.0 on six kills and four aces.
Gillian Dickerson (Frisco, TX/Wakeland) recorded a team-high 14 set assists and chipped in seven digs and two aces.
Match Two
Alfred University - 3 (25, 25, 25) | Penn College – 0 (12, 15, 15)
The Saxons were led by Whitney Kilton (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) with 10.0 points from nine kills and two block assists. Santavy added 9.0 points from eight kills and one ace.
Julia Abbott (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) recorded 8.5 points from eight kills and one block assist. Omelan had four aces and three kills for 7.0 points.
Dickerson upped her collegiate-high with 21 set assists. Jenesys Del Mar Moctezuma-Gonzalez (Bayamón, Puertón, Puerto Rico/North Cobb Rico/North Cobb) had a team-high eight digs and five service aces.
The Saxons will next close out the weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday, September 12 at the University of Rochester, facing Lewis & Clark College at 1:00pm and Smith College at 3:00pm.
