HOUGHTON, NY - The Alfred University baseball team began their week with a pair of losses to Houghton University on Wednesday night. 

The Saxons lost the first game in 15-5 fashion, while dropping the second leg in 6-5 fashion. 

Game 1

Luke Dubben (Cherry Valley, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield) got the initial start for the Saxons on the mound, lasting 2.2 innings. Both Mason Urso (Alden, NY/Alden) and Ashton Goring (Brampton, ON, Canada/Cardinal Ambrozic Secondary) made relief appearances for the Saxons. 

Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) was the first to record a hit for AU in the fourth inning, registering a double. Brought was brought home thanks to Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY/Edison) putting the ball in play. In the following inning, Harry Muliyil (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada/Cawthra Park) drove in Anthony Cortez (South Gate, CA/International Studies Learning Center). In the next at-bat, a defensive miscue by Houghton allowed Sam Brocklebank (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) to score. Later in the inning, Brought was credited with his second double of the evening to bring Ben Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) across home plate. Brought eventually scored from third base due to a wild pitch.

The Highlanders scored in each of the first four innings, ultimately securing their first win.  

Game 2

Alex Duske (Melbourne, Australia/Ivanhoe Grammar School) made the start as part of the second leg for Alfred University, retiring seven batters via strikeout. 

Zachary Haggerty (Hollywood, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) tallied the first base hit for the Saxons in the third inning with a single to right field. In the following at-bat, Dylan Treadway (Buffalo, NY/Amherst Central) registered a double to move runners into scoring position. Zach Russell (Purling, NY/Cairo-Durham) was efficient in the batter's box, sending a ball to left field, allowing Haggerty to score on a sacrifice fly. In the fourth inning, Brought earned his third double of the evening. Shortly after, a single from Haggerty was enough for Brought to score from second base. 

In the sixth inning, a single from Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) drove in Russell to add to AU's run total. Crucial hits in the seventh inning from Haggerty and Brocklebank in the final inning cut into the deficit for AU, but Houghton managed to hold on for the narrow win.  

Alfred University will next travel to face Russell Sage on Saturday for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
