TROY, NY - The Alfred University baseball team traveled to Russell Sage College and took a pair of losses in a series-opening doubleheader Saturday evening.
The Saxons fell to the Gators in game one, 19-4, and took the loss in game two 17-4.
Game One
Alfred University - 4 | Russell Sage College - 19
Thomas Makela (Cocoa, FL / Cocoa) got the start on the mound in game one for Alfred University, pitching 3.0 innings.
Axton Paul (Wolcott, NY / North Rose-Wolcott) and
Mason Urso (Alden, NY / Alden) made relief appearances, combining for 3.0 innings and two strikeouts.
The Saxons struck first in the first inning. Following an error and a double by
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA / Wellsboro Area),
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic) came across to score on a ground ball off the bat of
Zachary Haggerty (Hollywood, FL / Dr. Michael Krop).
Alfred University erupted for three runs in the fifth inning. After two errors and a walk by
Nick Yorlano (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills), Brought came across to score on a ground ball by
Zach Russell (Purling, NY / Cairo-Durham). With two runners in scoring position,
Sam Brocklebank (Bloomfield, NY / Bloomfield) stepped to the plate and bashed a three-run home run for his second of the season.
The Saxons' efforts weren't enough as they would go on to fall to Russell Sage College in game one.
Game Two

Michael Calogero (Henrietta, NY / Aquinas Institute) got the start on the mound in game two.
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY / Orchard Park) and
Luke Dubben (Cherry Valley, NY / Cherry Valley-Springfield) made relief appearances in the outing, pitching five combined innings for Alfred University.
The Saxons picked up a run in the third inning. Following an
Anthony Cortez (South Gate, CA / International Studies Learning Center) single into left field that put two runners on base,
Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY / Edison) scored on an error.
Alfred University found some fire in the seventh inning, scoring three runs. Following an error and two walks by
JT Stein (Surprise, AZ / Willow Canyon) and Colunio, Cortez hit a ground ball into the infield, bringing
Dylan Treadway (Buffalo, NY / Amherst Central) across home plate. With runners on second and third, DeFilippis lined a single into center field to score Stein from third. The Saxons weren't done there as Brought stepped to the plate and launched a single of his own to score Colunio from third.
Despite the late spark, Alfred University fell short in game two.
The Saxons are back in action for a series-closing game at Russell Sage College on Sunday, April 11th. The first pitch is at 12:00 pm.
