Historic Senior Day Sends Saxons to Empire 8 Tournament in 26-13 Win

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's lacrosse team put an exclamation point on its regular season by doubling up SUNY Poly (6-10, 2-7 Empire 8) in a 26-13 win behind some historic performances.

"Great day for the Saxons on Senior Day," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "Congrats to Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) for a record-breaking day. The offense did a nice job moving the ball. Tyler Muskopf (Elma, NY/Iroquois) continues to do a nice job between the lines."

Those three seniors were celebrated along with eight other teammates pregame for Senior Day. Cupp recorded a new career-high three goals in the game, while winning 29-of-31 face-offs. In addition, his 21 ground balls makes him the new record holder for most ground balls in a single season over Garrette Briggs '20, '21.

Meanwhile, Loewke scored an astonishing 11 goals to mark a new single-game record in both Alfred University and Empire 8 history. He also notched four assists to get to 15 points, also a single-game record in both AU and E8 history. Both records broke the previous ones held by Kevin Matson '25.

Fellow seniors Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) got a hat trick of his own while Nick Volpe (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) recorded a goal with two assists. Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) had the same stat line as fellow senior Volpe in his final home game.

Keagan Hoesterey (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) was the next-highest Saxon scorer with three goals and assists. Four other Saxons found the back of the net for a goal each, including Sam Crosby (Auburn, NY/Auburn), Mason Dressler (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove Area), Savino Bax (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Sam Herle (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park).

In addition, five more AU players notched assists to fill up the score sheet, including Jack Brady (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy), Jacob Michaels (Macedon, NY/Ruben A. Cirillo), Nicholas Kramer (Fredericksburg, VA/St. John Paul the Great), Rhett Krieger (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) and Stephan Meier (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville).

Krieger also found success at the face-off dot with Cupp, winning 7-of-8 draws. In the crease, Alex Petrangelo (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) got the win behind seven saves. Max Sigmund (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) made five saves in his fourth quarter appearance.

Prior to the game, AU celebrated 12 graduating seniors from the men's lacrosse program. Aside from the seniors previously mentioned, the Saxons also celebrated the careers of Brady McGowan (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), Tariq Joseph Jr (Newark, NY/Newark), Josh Funk (Newton Square, PA/Maple Newton), Ethan Karches (Marilla, NY/Iroquois), Ben Cunningham (Dover, MD/The Gunston School) and Christian Moon (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa).

Alfred University (8-8, 4-5 Empire 8) will head into the postseason with a rematch at SUNY Geneseo (11-5, 7-2 Empire 8) on Tuesday at 4 PM. Details regarding ticket information and venue information will be shared at a later date.
