AUBURNDALE, FL - The Alfred University baseball team began their 2026 season against Cornell College on Saturday as part of Spring Break action.
The Saxons dropped a high-scoring contest in 16-11 fashion in the first game, while securing a 14-2 victory in the second matchup.
"Based on everything we've seen from
Kyle Miller leading up to the season, we expected great things," Head Coach
Brian Kehew said. "Still, he blew us away with that performance. It was also special to see
Zachary Haggerty behind the plate again. He called a great game and picked up right where he left off with the bat by adding that home run.
Game One
Alex Beaird (Oswego, IL/Oswego) got the initial nod on the mound for Alfred University, striking out five batters across four innings.
Axton Paul (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) and
Charlie Rapos (Warkworth, ON, Canada/Campbellford District) both saw time in relief.
In the third inning, a single from
Gavin Walker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) led to an eventual RBI double from
Ben Croote (Middleburgh, NY Middleburgh) to put the Saxons on the scoreboard. Two innings later, a hit to left field by
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) allowed
Anthony Cortez (South Gate, CA/International Studies Learning Center) and
Dylan Treadway (Buffalo, NY/Amherst Central) to score. The Saxons cut further into their deficit following an RBI single by
Will Timpano (Orillia, ON, Canada/Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School).
Nick Yorlano (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) registered his first RBI of the spring season to add to the scoring column for Alfred University.
The Saxons added six runs in the final inning, but Cornell scored in five different innings to hold off a potential comeback.
Game Two
Kyle Miller (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) was dominant in his collegiate debut, allowing just three hits across five scoreless innings while retiring seven batters via strikeout.
The Saxons were the first to get on the scoreboard in the second inning after
Zach Russell (Purling, NY/Cairo-Durham) forced a walk with the bases loaded. DeFilippis added to the lead with an RBI single to right field, scoring a pair of Saxons.
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) hit an RBI single in the following at-bat, as AU led 4-0 entering the third inning.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Haggerty smashed a solo home run to left field to extend the advantage for Alfred University.
The following inning,
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) smacked an RBI double down the right field line to score both Pridmore and DeFilippis. The Saxons extended their lead thanks to hits by DeFilippis and Brought in the fifth inning. Three additional runs by AU in the sixth inning were enough for the Saxons to hold onto their first win of the season.
Alfred University will next compete in a doubleheader against Moravian University on Sunday beginning at 2:00 PM.
