Baseball Drops Pair of Games Against Moravian

AUBURNDALE, FL - The Alfred University baseball team wrapped up their first weekend of action with Moravian University on Sunday. The Saxons were shut out in 19-0 fashion in the first game, while losing 13-0 in the second leg.

"We need to get our confidence and comfort levels up at the plate so our hitters can start playing more to their potential," Head Coach Brian Kehew said. "Although, it was disrupted by a lightning delay, we got to watch a look at what Michael Calogero can do for us on the mound. He showed great stuff and impressive composure. I look forward to seeing him on the mound this year as a major piece of our staff."

Game One

Alfred University relied on a committee of players on the mound, combining for six strikeouts.

Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) was the first Saxon to record a hit, smacking a single to left field in the opening inning. In the second inning, Anthony Cortez (South Gate, CA/International Studies Learning Center) contributed with a single of his own for Alfred University.

Ben Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) and DeFilippis were each credited with hits in the fifth inning, but Alfred University couldn't get runners to cross home plate.

Michael Ciardiello (Rutherford, NJ/Moore Catholic) registered a pair of hits for AU in the fourth and sixth innings, but consistent scoring from Moravian was enough to come away with the win.

Game Two

Michael Calogero (Henrietta, NY/Aquinas Institute) started on the mound to begin the second contest for Alfred University. The first-year struck out four batters across four innings pitched.

Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) was responsible for the first hit for the Saxons in the opening inning, knocking a single through the right side. Following a brief weather delay, Alfred University and Moravian University resumed play following the third inning of action.

Charlie Rapos (Warkworth, ON, Canada/Campbellford District) entered the game in relief in the fifth inning, striking out three batters across 2.1 innings, with Mason Urso (Alden, NY/Alden) closing out the game.

Cortez was credited with a single to third base in the final inning, but Moravian relied on runs in four separate innings to complete the sweep.

Alfred University will return to action for a doubleheader against Elms College on Tuesday beginning at 2:30 PM.
