UTICA, NY -- The baseball team traveled to compete in a doubleheader against SUNY Poly Monday afternoon, dropping two Empire 8 games.
Alfred University went down in the first matchup 12-2, and were defeated in the second game by a score of 10-2.
Game one
Thomas Makela (Cocoa, FL/Cocoa) took the mound for the Saxons in game one, throwing 2.1 innings and allowing no free passes. Two pitchers made relief appearances for Alfred University.
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) threw two innings, striking out three batters and
Luke Rogoff (Cortland, NY/Cortland) threw two innings, striking out two.
In the final inning of play, following two hits off the bats of
Axton Paul (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) and
Samuel Almonte (Lake Worth, FL/Santaluces), the Saxons scored two runs off of wild pitches.
Game two
Michael Calogero (Henrietta, NY/Aquinas Institute) made the start for Alfred University in game two, going five innings and recording four strikeouts and just one walk.
Jack Grider (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) and
TJ Pappas (Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) went three innings and recorded two strikeouts collectively.
The Saxons got the games scoring started in the first inning. Following an
Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY/Edison) single and Almonte double, Colunio scored on a
Zack Haggarty (Hollywood, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) ground ball.
Later in the ninth inning,
Zack Russel (Purling, NY/Cairo-Durham) sent a single into centerfield and later reached third base following a wild pitch and an
Anthony Cortez (South Gate, CA/International Studies Learning Center) ground ball.
Harry Muliyil (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada/Cawthra Park) stepped up to the plate and bashed a single into right field to score Russel.Â
Alfred University will defend their home field and host Hilbert College for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 2nd. The first pitch is at 4:00pm.
