ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University baseball team faced off against Hilbert College for a doubleheader Thursday evening in the dense fog.

The Saxons took the loss in the first game 17-4, and were defeated in the second match-up 20-1.

Game One

Ashton Goring (Brampton, ON, Canada / Cardinal Ambrozic Secondary) got the start on the mound for Alfred University, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out three batters. Mason Urso (Alden, NY / Alden) and Axton Paul (Wolcott, NY / North Rose-Wolcott) both made relief appearances in game one, combining for 5.1 innings pitched and five strikeouts.

The Saxons scored all four runs in the fifth inning. Following three straight walks, Ben Croote (Middleburgh, NY / Middleburgh) sent a bases-loaded single to the third base side, moving the runners from station to station. With the bases still loaded, pinch-hitter Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY / Orchard Park) sent a rocket into center field for a double, scoring two runners and advancing Croote to third. Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA / Wellsboro Area) rounded out Alfred University's scoring, sending a sacrifice fly into center to score Croote.

Game Two

Making the start for the Saxons in game two was TJ Pappas (Saddle Brook, NJ / Saddle Brook), who pitched three innings and tallied three strikeouts. Charlie Rapos (Warkworth, ON, Canada / Campbellford District) rounded out the game for Alfred University, pitching two innings and striking out four batters of his own.

The Saxons obtained their one run in the contest after Zach Russell (Purling, NY / Cairo-Durham) blasted a double into right field and later scored after Harry Muliyil (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada / Cawthra Park) stepped to the plate and sent a rocket into left. The Saxons' efforts weren't enough as the game ended early due to thick fog.

Alfred University is back in action on Friday, April 3rd, for a 4:00 pm first pitch at Galanis Stadium against Utica University.
