ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University baseball team hosted their first-ever doubleheader against Houghton University on Saturday from Galanis Stadium at the Saxon Hill Sports Complex.
The Saxons lost the first game in 15-5 fashion, while being defeated 8-5 in the second leg.
"It was a special experience to be out on the new field today and play in front of our home crowd," Head Coach
Brian Kehew said. "We appreciate the support of everyone who came out as well as all those who made this day possible. We need to reduce the free passes and have better at-bats with runners in scoring position. It was great to see Nolan find his swing today. He is a big piece to our offense when we are operating correctly."
Game 1
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) made the start for Alfred University, striking out three batters across 3.2 innings. Three other Saxons made relief efforts as part of the first matchup.
With the bases loaded in the second inning,
Nick Yorlano (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) drew a walk to give Alfred University the initial lead. The Saxons extended their advantage in the inning after
Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY/Edison) drove in
Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area).
Later in the eighth inning,
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) smashed a double to bring
Ben Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) across home plate. Both
Axton Paul (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) and Brought were credited with an RBI in the same inning, but the Highlanders scored multiple runs in four of the final five innings to force an early end to the first matchup.
Game 2
Alex Beaird (Oswego, IL/Oswego) got the nod on the mound for AU in the second leg, retiring three batters via strikeout.
Michael Calogero (Henrietta, NY/Aquinas Institute) closed out the game for the Saxons, striking out four.
The offense for Alfred University got off to a quick start in the opening inning following an RBI double from Pridmore. The Highlanders responded with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to equalize the game.
The Saxons took the lead back after
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) scored from second base following an error by Houghton. Shortly after, Colunio scored from third base on a wild pitch. Alfred University added two more runs in the seventh inning, but Houghton forced a double play in the final inning to end the game and complete the sweep.
Alfred University will next host Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
