AUBURNDALE, FL - The Alfred University baseball team competed well as part of a split outing against Martin Luther College on Friday.
The Saxons won the first game in 4-3 fashion, while losing 16-8 in the second matchup.
"Kyle Miller and Zachary Haggerty continued to be really good for us," Head Coach Brian Kehew said. "I was also very impressed with everything Gavin Walker brought to the table today."
Game One
Kyle Miller (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) was outstanding in his second start of the spring season, registering five strikeouts as part of his first collegiate complete game.
Zachary Haggerty (Hollywood, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) was the first Saxon to record a hit in the second inning of action. With the bases loaded in the third inning,
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) drew a walk to put Alfred University on the scoreboard.
Martin Luther added runs in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings to force Alfred University to play from behind.
In the sixth inning,
Brayden Bedingfield (Seabrook, TX/Clear Falls) put the ball in play, allowing
Sam Brocklebank (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) to score from second base and tie the game. The Saxons took the lead back after Haggerty drove in
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic). Stepping in as the pinch runner,
Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY Edison) crossed home plate from a wild pitch to extend the advantage.
Martin Luther loaded the bases in the bottom half of the final inning, but a baserunning miscue as part of a sacrifice fly ended the game, as the Saxons came away with the win.
Game Two
Alex Beaird (Oswego, IL/Oswego) received the starting nod on the mound for AU for the second leg, striking out three batters across 3.1 innings pitched.
Charlie Rapos (Warkworth, ON, Canada/Campbellford District) made a relief appearance, closing out the remainder of the game.
Pridmore hustled out a wild pitch from third base to score and gave the Saxons the initial lead. Shortly after, Colunio smacked an RBI single to drive in Haggerty. Martin Luther answered with three runs in the following inning to take their first lead of the evening.
In the second inning,
Zach Russell (Purling, NY/Cairo-Durham) recorded an RBI single, driving in
Gavin Walker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) to equalize the game. DeFilippis then scored from a wild pitch to give the advantage back to AU. Russell continued his impressive evening with an RBI single in the third distance to add to the lead.
Martin Luther retaliated with three runs in the fourth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Walker drew a walk to once again tie the game. Martin Luther then added five runs of their own to put pressure on the Saxons.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning, AU's offense was sparked from a sacrifice fly from
Will Timpano (Orillia, ON, Canada/Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School). Two batters later, Brocklebank crushed a home run to left field to cut further into the deficit.
Additional runs from Martin Luther in the final inning was enough to come away with the win.
Alfred University will next conclude Spring Break competition with a doubleheader against Bard College on Saturday beginning at 4:00 PM.
