Baseball Swept by North Central in Spring Break Outing

WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Alfred University baseball team continued Spring Break with two losses to North Central University on Wednesday.

The Saxons lost the first game in 21-3 fashion, while coming up short in 12-10 fashion in the second leg.

"It was good to see the team come back in game two after a tough loss and really battle from the first pitch to the last," Head Coach Brian Kehew said. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to walk away with the win, but we made some really good adjustments on offense that we can hopefully carry forward into the coming games."

Game One

Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) began the first game on the mound for Alfred University, lasting three innings. Both Ashton Goring (Brampton, ON, Canada/Cardinal Ambrozic Secondary) and Sam Brocklebank (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) made relief appearances for Alfred University to close out the game.

The Saxons were the first to get on the scoreboard in the first inning after a hard-hit ball by Cameron Brought (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) allowed Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) to score from first base. After North Central tied the game, Alfred University relied on RBI singles from Gavin Walker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) and Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) to extend the advantage in the second inning. North Central then answered with 11 runs in the bottom half of the third inning to force AU to play from behind.

North Central added multiple runs in the fourth and fifth innings to distance their lead and ultimately come away with the win.

Game Two

Mason Urso (Alden, NY/Alden) made his second appearance of the Spring Break on Wednesday evening, being credited with 3.2 innings of action. Jack Grider (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) and Charlie Rapos (Warkworth, ON, Canada/Campbellford District) each made appearances on the mound for AU.

Zachary Haggerty (Hollywood, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) was the first to record a hit for Alfred University, smacking a single to right field in the opening inning. With the Saxons trailing by a single run in the second inning, an RBI double from Nick Yorlano (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) tied the game. In the next at-bat, heads-up baserunning by Walker from third base gave AU the lead following a wild pitch. Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY Edison) capitalized for Alfred University with an RBI single to extend the lead in the same inning.

With the bases loaded in the third inning, Dylan Treadway (Buffalo, NY/Amherst Central) put the ball in play to add to Alfred University's advantage. Shortly after, Will Timpano (Orillia, ON, Canada/Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School) scored from a wild pitch. Colunio continued his impressive afternoon with a double down the right field line to give AU a 7-1 lead.

North Central responded with six runs of their own in the fourth inning to tie the game, eventually taking back the lead after scoring three runs in the following inning.

In the bottom half of the fifth inning, DeFilippis registered an RBI single to spark the AU offense. Two batters later, Benjamin Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) scored on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, DeFilippis scored on a wild pitch to tie the game once again.

A late hit from North Central in the sixth inning put Alfred University behind by two runs. The Saxons were unable to put any runs across the final two innings, as North Central came away with the sweep.

Alfred University will next compete in a doubleheader against Martin Luther College on Friday beginning at 3:15 PM.
