ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team opened their weekend with a narrow 68-67 overtime loss to SUNY Geneseo on Friday evening from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led Alfred University with a team-high 16 points to go with four rebounds and a pair of assists.
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) finished the game with 14 points and three steals on the defensive end.
Andria Siamashvili (Belgrade, Serbia/Rabun Gap Cacoochee School) added 13 points off the bench for AU.
Five early points from
Nolan Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) gave the Saxons the initial lead. A jump shot by Baitey had Alfred University ahead by as many as seven points. The Knights responded with a 9-0 run that was ended by a basket from Siamashvili. A late three-point play from Siamashvili gave the advantage back to AU momentarily, but four points in the final 90 seconds for the Knights had the Saxons trailing 27-25 going into the break.
A layup by
Gennaro Picco (Hornell, NY/Hornell) opened scoring for Alfred University in the second half. The Knights built an eight-point advantage for themselves, but five straight points from Curran had AU behind by a single possession with under four minutes remaining in regulation. Moments later, a layup by Baitey tied the game with 1:43 on the clock. Baitey came through for Alfred University once again in the closing seconds, tying the game and sending the matchup into overtime. Baitey scored the first five points for Alfred University to begin overtime. Geneseo answered with successful free throw shooting to close out the game with a win.
Alfred University will next host SUNY Brockport on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
