ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team remained competitive as part of a 75-70 loss to SUNY Brockport on Saturday afternoon from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Gennaro Picco (Hornell, NY/Hornell) led Alfred University with a team-high 23 points to go with four steals on the defensive end.
Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) finished the game with 17 points along with four rebounds and three assists.
Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) added 13 points for AU.
"Credit to Coach Clarke and Brockport for their efforts tonight," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "We know where we stand at this point in this season, and none of us are happy about it, but we are together. And we will keep fighting to fix things no matter what."
The Saxons relied on four consecutive shots from beyond the arc to begin the contest. The Golden Eagles answered with an 11-0 run to force Alfred University to play from behind.
Tyler Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added a team-high 11 points in the half, but AU trailed 40-29 going into halftime.
Back-to-back deep shots from Hind and Picco cut the deficit to single digits for the Saxons in the early stages of the second half. Moments later, five straight points from Hind had Alfred University trailing by six points with 16 minutes remaining. Later in the half, Picco scored five points across 13 seconds to cut the deficit to four points with under 13 seconds to play. The Saxons continued to play well on the defensive end, but Brockport scored eight points from the free throw line to close out the game with a win.
Alfred University will travel to face Houghton University on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.
