FREDONIA, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team fell in their opening match of the Blue Devil Classic to the hosts, Fredonia, by the final score of 3-1.

AU had plenty of looks, totaling 11 shots in the match. Seven of them challenged the Blue Devils' netminder on net. Niko Lampros (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge) had two shots in the start, and Ian Ashworth (Hornell, NY/Hornell) also had two shots on net coming off the bench.

Sophomore Dennis Hayes V (Ferndale, NY/Berkley) led the Saxons with four shots on goal, playing the full 90 minutes. He was also rewarded with the lone Saxon goal in the 57th minute. The forward was able to chase down several back passes, force an error by the goalkeeper, and shot it into a gaping net. 

In goal for Alfred University, Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) recorded two saves. He was unfortunate not to stop an early penalty kick for Fredonia to give them the lead. He was not forced to make a save in the second half, as AU pushed forward for the equalizer. Unfortunately for the Saxons, an 87th minute goal by the Blue Devils put the game to bed.

AU will get a chance at redemption on Saturday afternoon in their second match of the Blue Devil Classic against Buffalo State. Kick-off is at 3:00 p.m.
