Saxons Drop First Empire 8 Game Against Houghton

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team and their four-game unbeaten streak are no more thanks to a 2-1 loss against the Houghton Highlanders.

The Highlanders (3-4-1, 1-0-0 Empire 8) snagged its first conference win of the year, while the Saxons (4-4-1, 2-1-1) dropped their first of the season.

AU was behind the eight-ball early in the 15th minute on Houghton's first shot on goal. But they kept on fighting, putting up 14 shots alone in the first half. Hamza Kromah (Margibi, Liberia/Western Reserve Academy) led the way with eight shots in the match.

He would also convert on the lone Alfred University goal on Saturday afternoon. He fought off a defender and was able to tuck it in the net. None of it would've been possible without Jesus De La Torre (Malaga, Spain/The Woodstock Academy) and his brilliant pass from midfield. It marked the junior's first assist and point scored in his AU career.

Dennis Hayes V (Ferndale, MI/Berkley) and Derek Alexei Rodriguez (Panama Oeste, Panama/Colegio San Gabriel de la Dolorosa) each notched three shots in their offensive prowess, while Niko Lampros (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge) and Christian Martinez (Grand Prairie, TX/South Grand Prairie) had two shots of their own. Ian Landsittel (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) joined in them in the same feat off the bench.

The Saxons fell behind again in the 71st minute, and had a golden opportunity to get back into it when Kromah earned a penalty kick just six minutes later. His ensuing shot came down off the bar on the wrong side of the line, and AU couldn't quite force an equalizer over the line in the closing minutes.

Alfred University will have to rebound on the road, as they take on St. John Fisher University on Wednesday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
