ROCHESTER, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team played in its first Empire 8 conference road game of the season at Nazareth University, coming away with the 1-0 win.
The Saxons (4-3-1, 2-0-1 Empire 8) stay undefeated in conference play, while the Golden Flyers (3-2-2, 1-1-0 Empire 8) dropped its first conference game of the season.
"I am impressed with the running that we did defensively," Head Coach
Garret Eldridge said. "We closed spaces and worked incredibly hard against a good Nazareth team."
It was a cagey affair for the first 15 minutes until AU broke through with the team's only goal.
Juan Jose Menendez Gutierrez (Villanueva Cañada, Madrid, Spain/Woodstock Academy) forced Nazareth back into their own defensive zone, and caused an error by their goaltender. He was able to pounce and rolled the ball over the line in the 16th minute.
He led the way all afternoon for the Saxons, with three shots - all three challenging the Golden Flyers' netminder.
Hamzah Kromah (Margibi, Liberia/Western Reserve Academy) had his way in the midfield, while having three shots of his own and moving his team up the field.
Jaime Mendo Robles (Zaragoza, Spain/Hoosac),
Niko Lampros (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge),
Duje Boric (Mali Losinj, Croatia/XII Gymnasium), and
Christian Martinez (Grand Prairie, TX/South Grand Prairie) recorded the other four shots for Alfred University.
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) held the line with five saves in his fourth win of the season.
AU continues conference play back home on Saturday afternoon against Houghton University at 1:00 p.m.
