HOUGHTON, NY - The Alfred University baseball team picked up their second conference win in program history as part of a doubleheader effort against Elmira College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Saxons lost the first game in 10-1 fashion before picking up a 13-8 win against the Soaring Eagles.
"Our pitchers did a good job competing today," Head Coach
Brian Kehew said. "It was great to see Noah and Ben come through in big moments with runner on base."
Game 1
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) got the start on the mound for AU to begin the afternoon, retiring six batters via strikeout across 5.0 innings pitched.
The Saxons offense found some momentum early in the first inning, as
Benjamin Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) and
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) were each credited with a single.
Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY/Edison) put the ball in play to allow Croote to score to put Alfred University on the scoreboard. AU did not record any more hits in the contest, while Elmira responded with runs in four different innings to come away with the win.
Game 2
Owen Jennings (Newcastle, ON, Canada/St. Stephen's Secondary) got the nod for the Saxons to begin the second leg of the doubleheader. Jennings struck out three batters through 6.0 innings pitched.
Elmira scored four runs in the second inning to force AU to play from behind. In the following inning, a single from Weimer to left field brought home
Jack Grider (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) and
Brayden Bedingfield (Seabrook, TX/Clear Falls) to cut into the deficit. Colunio put the ball back into play, as
Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) crossed home plate, as AU trailed by one run.
A fielding error by the Soaring Eagles allowed two Saxons runners to score and take the lead. Later in the inning, smart base running from
Noah Madueno (Florence, AZ/Florence) resulted in an additional run following a wild pitch.
Elmira scored once in the fourth inning, but AU responded after Madueno registered an RBI single to right field. The Saxons were able to extend their lead after
Sam Brocklebank (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) was credited with an RBI single.
Alfred University continued to apply pressure in the seventh inning, as a sacrifice fly from Bedingfield brought home Madueno. With the bases loaded, Petrozzini was hit by a pitch, bringing in Brocklebank.
The Saxons relied on a pair of RBI doubles in the eighth inning from Madueno and Brocklebank to extend their advantage. Bedingfield brought home Brocklebank following an RBI single for AU.
Luke Rogoff (Cortland, NY/Cortland) was efficient in relief for the Saxons, striking out four batters in 3.0 innings pitched and helping AU pick up the conference win.
Alfred University will next host Brockport on Saturday for a weekend series beginning at 12:00 PM.
