ELMIRA, NY - The Alfred University baseball team opened their week with an 18-8 loss to Elmira College on Monday afternoon.
Derek Vlietstra (Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley) got the start on the mound, striking out three batters across 2.1 innings pitched. Three other relievers saw time on the mound for Alfred University.
The Saxons jumped out with an initial lead in the top of the first inning following a three-run home run by
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park). In the following inning, Elmira scored six runs to force AU to play from behind.
A double by
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) allowed
Jack Grider (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) and
Will Timpano (Orillia, ON, Canada/Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School) to score, cutting the deficit for the Saxons. In the following at-bat, a single by
Brayden Bedingfield (Seabrook, TX/Clear Falls) brought home DeFilippis.
Benjamin Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) registered his first collegiate home run, equalizing the game for Alfred University. Elmira, however, relied on nine runs across the following five innings to come away with the home win.
Alfred University will next finish their series against Elmira College on Wednesday with the doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM. Both games will take place on the Houghton University campus.
