ROCHESTER, NY -- The Alfred University men's tennis team played its second straight match up in Rochester, this time facing off against the St. John Fisher Cardinals. They fell in a 7-2 defeat.
"Going into this match we thought it was going to be a dog fight and it was," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "I was proud of the intensity and competitive matches from the guys. This was a step in the right direction and showed where we still need to go."
The two wins in the afternoon both came from
Breece Erickson (Goshen, IN/Bethany Christian). He took his singles match in a highly-competitive affair in the second singles match. It took a 7-3 tiebreak to win the first set 7-6. Erickson dropped the second set, but took the third set beyond the distance 11-9.
Erickson was also valiant alongside
Ricardo Alvarez Janik (La Orotava, Spain/Colegio Casa Azul) in their doubles match. Again, it required a tiebreak which AU won 7-4 to win the match 8-7.Â
The Saxons had plenty of other competitive matches up and down the roster sheet. Alvarez Janik took his singles match to three sets himself. Plus,
Mark Ungruian (Chornomorsk, Ukraine/School #6) forced the first set of his singles match to go to seven, as did
George K. Fearon (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs).
AU men's tennis will host their final two matches of the regular season, first against non-conference Oswego State on Friday, April 25. Their annual Saxon-for-Saxon match gets underway at 4:00 p.m.
