Baseball Completes Weekend Series With Loss Against St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University baseball team wrapped up their weekend with a 19-8 loss to St. John Fisher University on Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons (3-23, 1-13 Empire 8) were forced to play from behind after the Cardinals scored six runs across the first four innings of action.

Alex Beaird (Oswego, IL/Oswego) pitched well on the mound for AU, striking out three batters across six innings.

Alfred University (3-23, 1-13 Empire 8) relied on a double in the fifth inning from Benjamin Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) to bring home Zach Russell (Puling, NY/Cairo-Durham) to put the Saxons on the scoreboard. In the following at-bat, a single by Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY/Edison) allowed Sam Brocklebank (Bloomfield, NY/Bloomfield) to score. A grand slam by Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) cleared the bases for AU, equalizing the score.

The Cardinals (17-13, 12-4 Empire 8) relied on a solo home run in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take back the lead. In the following inning with the bases loaded, Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) drew a walk to tie the game once again. An additional home run by St. John Fisher in the bottom half of the sixth inning once again had AU trailing.

In the eighth inning, a double down the right field line by Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) allowed Croote to score, as the Saxons cut their deficit in half. The Cardinals answered with 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning to come away with the win.

Alfred University will next travel to face Elmira College on Monday at 3:00 PM.
