ROCHESTER, NY - The Alfred University baseball team began their series with a pair of losses against St. John Fisher on Friday afternoon.
The Saxons (3-22, 1-12 Empire 8) were defeated by the Cardinals (16-3, 11-4 Empire 8) in 17-1 fashion in the first game, while dropping the second game, 24-5.
Game 1
Alex Duske (Melbourne, Australia/Ivanhoe Grammar School) got the initial start for the Saxons, as the team relied on four others in relief efforts.
The first hit for AU was recorded in the top of the second inning, as
Ashton Colunio (Elmira, NY/Edison) recorded a single to center field. Two innings later,
Nolan Pridmore (Toronto, ON, Canada/Etobicoke Collegiate Institute) was credited with a double.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Brayden Bedingfield (Seabrook, TX/Clear Falls) gave the AU offense a spark with a single to center field with one out. In the next at-bat,
Angelo DeFilippis (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) registered a single to move Bedingfield into scoring position. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch,
Zach Russell (Puling, NY/Cairo-Durham) put the ball in play, allowing Bedingfield to score. The Cardinals relied on multiple runs in five different innings to come away with the win.
Game 2
Derek Vlietstra (Otisville, NY/Minisink) started the second leg of the doubleheader for AU, with three other Saxons seeing time on the mound.
The Saxons offense set the tone in the opening inning, as
Benjamin Croote (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) registered a double in his first at-bat. With runners on first and second base, Pridmore cleared the bases with a triple for the initial 2-0 lead.
Will Timpano (Orillia, ON, Canada/Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School) put the ball in play for the Saxons, bringing home Pridmore to extend the advantage. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, a fielding error by the Cardinals allowed Croote and Russell to score.
St. John Fisher answered with runs in each of the first six innings to complete the sweep.
Alfred University will next conclude their series against St. John Fisher University on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
