HOUGHTON, NY -- The Alfred University men's tennis team paid another visit to face off against the Houghton Highlanders. They wound up falling 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
When you have a guy like sophomore
Jeffery Merejo (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville), a walk on player who filled in last minute, a glue guy who brings the team together, pull out a big win at the 6th singles is proof college tennis is a team sport," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "This is a tight knit group of guys who are going to continue to put in the work to get where they want to be. We aren't there yet, but we are on our way."
Merejo did come up big in relief, especially after dropping the first set 6-4. He roared back in the second set with a 6-3 win, and then took the tie-breaking third set in a close 10-7 effort.
The other win in the evening came from
Breece Erickson (Goshen, IN/Bethany Chrisitian) in his singles match. It too was a close and competitive match, where he took the first set in a 6-0 sweep. Houghton forced a third set which Erickson took 10-8.
AU did come close in the doubles match as well involving
Mark Ungurian (Chornomorsk, Ukraine/School #6) and
George K. Fearon (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs). Knotted up at seven in a close battle, it took another tiebreaker to get over the third pairing.
The season continues to roll on with the first of two days straight of tennis for the Saxons. They'll start on Friday night against the University of Rochester at 6:00 p.m.
