HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University baseball team wrapped up the weekend with a doubleheader against Russell Sage College on Sunday.
The Saxons (3-20, 1-10 Empire 8) lost the first game, 10-4, and the second, 9-0.
"I was happy with the starting pitching from
Alex Beaird and
Owen Jennings," Head Coach
Brian Kehew said. "The defense has been playing better as well. Now we need to make quicker adjustments on offense to start scoring earlier and more often."
Game 1
After the Gators took the 2-0 lead at the top of the third,
Benjamin Weimer (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) hit a double to left field that sent
Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) and
Brayden Bedingfield (Seabrook, TX/Clear Falls) to home place which tied the game.
Alfred University recorded two runs during the final two innings of the contest.
Michael Ciardiello (Rutherford, NJ/ Moore Catholic) registered a double to left field that sent
Noah Madueno (Florence, AZ/Florence) to score in the sixth. With the bases loaded during the seventh, Weimer hit a single to left field that allowed everyone to advance and Bedingfield to earn a run.
Unfortunately, Russell Sage College (16-7, 10-0 Empire 8) scored eight runs that put the game out of reach.
Owen Jennings (Newcastle, ON, Canada/St. Stephen's Secondary) was the starting pitcher and played a season-high 6.0 innings while notching three strikeouts.
Both teams were tied in hits with 11 each. Four Saxons posted two hits apiece.
